Why is Teen Consumption of Cannabis Falling?

Even though cannabis sales have plunged during COVID-19, why has the consumption of teens declined?

Since the legalization of cannabis in several parts of the United States, adults are fearing about the kind of message they are sending to their kids. Though, it is easier for patients to clear 420 evaluations and get their medical marijuana for their illness; but legalizing medical cannabis means saying to kids- “cannabis is okay”.

Even medical marijuana doctors are not hesitant anymore to recommend cannabis to patients in need. Some are even self-medicating them with cannabis. However, they do get a consultation and an OK to consume cannabis.

On the other hand, we have tobacco and alcohol. These two items are far more harmful and dangerous than cannabis. Yet, they are legal. Of course, legalizing cannabis was accompanied by a fear-mongering about increased cannabis usage among teenagers. However, the data shows completely the opposite effect in the cannabis legalized states.

What do the researches say?

A source writes about Dale Quigley, a career prohibitionist, speaking on the finding concerning the matter. He is unsure about the reasons for the falling data but he surely has some theories to back them up.

“For some reason, the use rate among this age bracket is going down,” said Dale Quigley, deputy coordinator for the National Marijuana Initiative, a project of the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) program. “We’re not 100 percent sure why it’s going down. It’s a good thing that it’s going down, but we don’t understand why.”

What could be the reason for the falling data?

Researchers studying this falling data are still unsure about the reason but they are trying their best to reach a conclusion on this matter.

A study in October 2019 in Washington State says that probably since the cannabis market is more regulated and the black market is more controlled due to its legalization. Teens can no more buy cannabis from illicit markets. Perhaps, it is because of the loss of knickknack among the teens.

Black markets of cannabis are still available because of the high taxes imposed. Some say that black market cannabis in legal states is just the legal cannabis sold on black market. However, such issues give rise to studies which have not been considered yet.

Economy and Risk

Teens have access to cannabis as it was available virtually at every corner of the street. They prefer cannabis strains that are cheap.

Whereas legal cannabis is not that cheap. It can be expensive if you prefer quality over quantity. But, consuming dab costing $30- $40  is not a feasible option for those who do not make money.  A teenager cannot ask their parents for $100 for buying cannabis. Buying from the black market is more an inexpensive option.

The second factor is Risk. The black market cannabis sellers are still selling- there is no change in that. However, home growers do not sell to teens. They fear that there are risks involved by selling to teens and people are not ready to take it. Homegreewers say that if they grow cannabis and sell to adults- it is okay- they might have to pay some fines or do community services. But selling to teenagers come with additional problems.
